Data Architect (AWS)

Location: Hybrid, with 3 days per week in the Oakville, Ontario office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Compensation: $165,000–$210,000 CAD per year.

What you will do

• Define a managed AWS reference architecture for a reliable data foundation that can be operated by a small team.
• Design layered data models from raw and cleansed data through curated and safe analytical layers without sensitive data.
• Establish governance for data classification, constituent PII handling, access control, lineage, and data residency.
• Create reusable patterns for data capture, land-and-store, transform-and-serve, and governance.
• Design loosely coupled integrations with operational systems using change-data-capture or scheduled extracts.
• Set guardrails for governed, pattern-based delivery and permitted low-code workflows, while building data products when additional delivery support is needed.

Requirements

• Senior data architecture experience with production AWS systems, including S3-based lake or lakehouse designs and a governed analytical layer.
• Deep fluency with medallion or layered data architectures and cross-layer governance controls.
• Experience designing contextual or semantic data layers that reduce GenAI token consumption and improve the speed and cost of downstream AI features.
• Hands-on knowledge of managed AWS data services such as Glue, Athena, Lake Formation, and DMS or equivalent, with a preference for managed services over self-run infrastructure.
• Experience designing data classification, PII handling, access control, lineage, and residency controls, ideally in a regulated or public sector context.
• Ability to define an appropriately scoped blueprint, defer work that is not yet needed, and hand off clear, documented patterns for a small team to execute.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with dbt, warehouse-side modeling such as Redshift, and low-code orchestration such as n8n.
• Experience with Canadian data residency requirements and multi-region AWS deployments.
• Experience establishing governance from day one rather than retrofitting it later.
