TL;DR
Combustion Engineer (Cryogenic Rocket Propulsion): Designing, analyzing, and optimizing combustion devices and injectors for cryogenic rocket engines with an accent on reacting-flow CFD, hot-fire testing, and combustion-performance analysis. Focus on correlating CFD models with test data, deriving combustion-stability metrics, and solving discrepancies under technical uncertainty.

Location: On-site in Bordeaux, France. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are available where applicable.

The Exploration Company develops, produces, and operates Nyx, a modular and reusable orbital space vehicle designed for in-orbit refueling and cargo transport.

What you will do

  • Develop and analyze combustor fluidic systems using combustion theory and CFD.
  • Design and optimize liquid rocket engine injectors against combustor requirements.
  • Define instrumentation for hot-fire testing and interpret post-test data.
  • Process hot-fire test data to derive performance and combustion-stability metrics.
  • Maintain data-processing tools and correlate CFD models with test results.
  • Support design reviews by presenting analysis methods, assumptions, and margins.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience in combustion, propulsion, or reacting-flow engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of bi-liquid rocket combustion and cryogenic propellants.
  • Experience with reacting-flow CFD using RANS and/or LES, including tools such as ANSYS, OpenFOAM, or CONVERGE.
  • Strong scripting and data-analysis skills in Python or a similar language.
  • Rigorous, methodical communication and collaboration across thermo-mechanical, systems, and test engineering.

Nice to have

  • Experience with liquid rocket injector CFD.
  • Familiarity with combustion instability, thermoacoustics, or uncertainty quantification.
  • Participation in hot-fire test campaigns.
