Principal Software Engineer (Linux/Go)

Location: Cupertino, California, United States; hybrid with an average requirement of two days per week from an HPE office

Salary: USD 178,000–361,000 annual base salary in California; variable incentives may also be offered.

What you will do

• Build and maintain Golang applications for Linux user-space management on Debian-based distributions.
• Develop package monitoring and update-management tools using apt/dpkg APIs, maintaining version consistency.
• Design service observability systems for status tracking, health metrics, and automated log retrieval and parsing.
• Oversee production-ready Debian packaging, including .deb files, post-install scripts, and dependency management.
• Lead the transition to modular, service-oriented system tools while maintaining Linux performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Expert proficiency in Golang for systems-level programming.
• Deep knowledge of Linux user space, including system calls, signals, and IPC.
• Strong understanding of Linux system management, including systemd, journald, and file systems.
• Hands-on experience with Debian packaging and package management internals.

Nice to have

• Experience designing distributed systems or microservice architectures.
• Proficiency in Python for scripting, automation, or maintaining system utilities.
• Familiarity with AppArmor, SELinux, or secure boot concepts.
• Experience profiling Go applications with pprof and optimizing resource usage on embedded or server-grade Linux.
