TL;DR
Automation Mechanical Engineer III (Industrial Automation) (PLC/HMI/Robotics): Designing, integrating, and commissioning custom automated manufacturing systems for reusable space vehicle production with an accent on control architectures, industrial safety, and offline simulation. Focus on developing PLC, HMI, and robot controls, diagnosing complex system failures from first principles, and validating automated systems through testing and commissioning.

Location: Central Texas; U.S. citizenship, nationality, permanent residence, refugee status, or asylum status required

Base pay range for Colorado applicants: $150,931.00–$211,303.05 annually; other site ranges may differ.

What you will do

  • Design control system architectures for custom automated manufacturing equipment, including networks, I/O distribution, safety systems, and communication protocols.
  • Develop and integrate PLC, HMI, robot, and industrial control programs for automated systems.
  • Create offline simulations to validate control logic, robot paths, cycle times, and system behavior before hardware is available.
  • Integrate auxiliary equipment, machines, and tools into unified control systems.
  • Support panel fabrication, field installation, commissioning, start-up, and factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Create controls documentation, including sequences of operation, I/O lists, network diagrams, and program documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, controls, or a related engineering field.
  • At least four years of hands-on experience developing or integrating industrial controls and automation systems, with PLC and HMI programming as core competencies.
  • Experience with industrial automation platforms such as robots, material handling systems, CNC integration, NDT, assembly, testing, or process tools.
  • Ability to interpret and review electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience designing industrial safety systems, including functional safety devices, safety PLCs, and safety-rated circuits.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of IEC 61131, ANSI B11, NFPA 79, RIA R15.06, IEC 62061, or ISO 13849.
  • Experience with offline programming or virtual commissioning tools such as Plant Simulate, Process Simulate, Visual Components, KUKA.Sim, or RobotStudio.
  • Experience with industrial machine vision, electrical control panels, and electrical CAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
  • Experience delivering custom automated manufacturing systems from concept through production ramp-up.
