Staff Archaeologist

Location: Based in the Bismarck, North Dakota area, United States. U.S. work authorization is required.

Salary: $72,100–$111,300 per year, depending on qualifications and experience; bonus eligible.

What you will do

• Review client and project manager requests, assist with proposals, and coordinate project needs with project managers, clients, and the cultural resource group.
• Conduct pedestrian walkover surveys, controlled surface surveys, hand excavation, and other archaeological field investigations.
• Direct archaeological site documentation, maintain field records, and determine appropriate survey coverage.
• Ensure accurate digital survey data collection and quality control using Trimble R1, iPad, ArcGIS, and AGO.
• Write archaeological reports, agency letters, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act request forms, and other project documents.
• Oversee field crew safety, PPE use, project safety procedures, and the quality and timeliness of fieldwork.

Requirements

• Secretary of the Interior-qualified for Archaeology with a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related science.
• Knowledge of federal and state-specific cultural resource guidelines, particularly those applicable to North Dakota and surrounding states.
• Experience leading archaeological field crews and guiding Archaeology Field Technicians to produce quality work on schedule.
• Ability to perform pedestrian surveys, evaluative site testing, site documentation, and archaeological fieldwork, including solo work when required.
• Ability to calculate percentages, area, ratio, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations related to cultural and historic preservation.
• Competency in writing detailed archaeological reports and business correspondence.
• Proficiency with digital data collection using the ArcGIS and AGO platform.
• Strong written and verbal communication, collaboration, diplomacy, time management, and ability to communicate issues to all levels of management.

Nice to have

• A minimum of three years of experience in a similar leadership capacity conducting pedestrian surveys and evaluative site testing fieldwork.
• Project-specific certifications and licensure, where applicable.
