Safety Engineer (Cybersecurity)

Location: Maidenhead, United Kingdom. The role is onsite and requires candidates to be British citizens who have been resident in the UK for the past 5 years for SC clearance and 10 years for DV clearance.

What you will do

• Conduct requirements and design assessments to identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards throughout the product lifecycle.
• Perform hazard analysis, safety assessments, failure mode analysis, FMEA, and FMECA for electronic and high-assurance systems.
• Define safety requirements, maintain hazard logs, and ensure traceability through implementation, verification, and validation.
• Develop safety cases and compliance documentation aligned with project requirements and applicable defence and industry standards.
• Lead safety reviews, hazard identification workshops, design reviews, and risk assessments with multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide specialist guidance to engineering teams, customers, regulators, and assurance bodies while mentoring less experienced engineers.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of Def Stan 00-56, MIL-STD 1629, MIL-HDBK-217F, ARP4761, and ARP4754, with the ability to apply them pragmatically.
• Experience with PHA, FHA, FTA, ETA, safety cases, risk assessment, mitigation, and risk acceptance processes.
• Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments such as defence, aerospace, rail, nuclear, or similar sectors.
• Understanding of verification and validation, configuration management, version control, change management, and defect tracking.
• Strong technical communication, stakeholder management, problem-solving, organisation, and independent working skills.
• Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain DV security clearance; British citizenship and qualifying UK residency are required for the relevant clearance process.

Nice to have

• Experience with continuous integration, automated testing, and DevSecOps for assured or high-integrity systems.
• Experience using DOORS, Enterprise Architect, or similar requirements and systems engineering tools.
• Knowledge of digital electronics, digital logic design, and hardware failure modes.
• Experience developing military equipment or UK high-grade cryptographic and other high-assurance secure systems.
