TL;DR
Energy Efficiency Engineer (Energy Efficiency): Identifying and quantifying energy savings measures for medium to large commercial and industrial facilities with an accent on energy modeling, project economics, and measurement and verification. Focus on conducting site assessments, verifying installations with field monitoring and functional performance tests, and coordinating utility customers, contractors, and program stakeholders.

Location: Des Moines, Iowa, United States; hybrid workplace. Local travel up to 20% is required, including customer site visits.

Salary: $60,000–$90,000 per year, plus potential discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

  • Support prescriptive and custom energy efficiency projects through energy modeling, simulation, economic analysis, project scoping, and implementation planning.
  • Assess medium to large commercial and industrial facilities to identify improvements across lighting, HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, process heating, motors, boilers, pumping, and other energy systems.
  • Prepare technical reports covering energy savings, cost savings, project costs, incentives, and simple payback.
  • Conduct measurement and verification site visits, install monitoring equipment, collect BAS data, perform functional tests, and verify project installations.
  • Coordinate with program staff, contractors, utility customers, and other stakeholders to maximize program benefits.
  • Deliver clear, technically rigorous work while maintaining project budgets and schedules.

Requirements

  • BS or MS degree, preferably in Mechanical, Energy, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • 2–4 years of project experience or similar experience in the energy efficiency industry.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and collaborate with technical staff.
  • Strong oral communication, writing, analytical, planning, organizational, and self-management skills.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, good driving record, and personal vehicle required for customer site visits.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to travel locally up to 20%.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of energy savings opportunities in building energy systems.
  • Familiarity with IECC, Code of Federal Regulations, ASHRAE 90.1, or similar standards.
  • Experience managing multiple projects or programs, budgets, deliverables, and client relationships.
  • Progress toward or interest in obtaining a P.E., C.E.M., C.B.C.P., C.E.A., or similar certification.
