Location: US-based candidates strongly preferred. Primary preference is in-person at the San Francisco office; remote candidates in New York or Washington, DC are welcome as a secondary preference. London-based candidates considered on an exceptional basis.

Salary: $150,000–$240,000

What you will do

• Develop and execute a long-term media strategy to elevate the organization's profile and research expertise.
• Proactively pitch and place stories with top-tier US media outlets to establish the organization as a default source on AI safety.
• Advise leadership on communicating complex technical material clearly and credibly.
• Build and maintain a communications preparedness framework for crisis management.
• Create systems, templates, and playbooks to ensure consistent communications quality.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to align external messaging with research integrity.

Requirements

• 7–8+ years of senior experience in strategic communications, science or technology journalism.
• Demonstrated track record of proactive pitching and placing stories with top-tier US outlets.
• Experience building a communications function or long-term media strategy from scratch.
• Strong editorial judgment and ability to translate complex technical material into clear narratives.
• Experience with crisis communications and reputational risk management.
• Must be based in the US (San Francisco, New York, or Washington DC preferred).

Nice to have

• Familiarity with AI safety, advanced AI systems, or adjacent technical domains.
• Experience supporting senior leadership positioning at an organizational level.
• Track record of elevating organizational brand and thought leadership programs.
