Senior Controls Systems Engineer (Automation)

Location: United States; regional field-support role with frequent visits to fulfillment centers. Listed locations include Jessup, Plymouth, Wilkes-Barre, and Boston. Travel of approximately 25%–40% is required, with occasional additional travel for launches or critical events, plus rotational weekend and after-hours on-call support.

What you will do

• Serve as the regional technical expert for controls supporting conveyors, sortation, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, and robotics.
• Troubleshoot complex downtime events, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions and long-term solutions.
• Lead controls change requests, standard work, documentation, condition assessments, and lifecycle or upgrade planning across the network.
• Monitor uptime, efficiency, faults, MTBF, MTTR, and system availability to drive reliability improvements.
• Support commissioning readiness, acceptance testing, and standardization of new equipment launches with Operations, Engineering, IT, and vendors.
• Develop training and mentoring for Controls Systems Engineers and maintenance teams, and present major-event findings to leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• 6+ years of progressive experience with PLC-based controls build, development, troubleshooting, and support in automated fulfillment, distribution, manufacturing, or material-handling environments.
• Strong experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley controls, HMI creation, industrial networking, EtherNet/IP, device networks, scanners, and sensors.
• Understanding of WMS/WCS/WES integrations, PLC network topology, field-device interfaces, motor controls, VFDs, and electrical troubleshooting.
• Ability to lead cross-site technical initiatives, manage projects, communicate with senior leaders, and drive measurable performance improvements.
• Ability to travel 25%–40% regionally and participate in rotational weekend and after-hours on-call support.

Nice to have

• Experience with industrial robotics, ASRS, or goods-to-person automation.
• Experience with an industrial automation or material-handling system integrator or OEM.
• Lean or Six Sigma training at Green Belt level or higher.
• Strong customer-service skills and the ability to influence without direct authority.
