Staff Software Engineer (Agentic AI)

Location: On-site in Los Angeles, Mountain View, San Francisco, or New York City, United States

Base salary: $251,000–$310,000 USD annually

What you will do

• Lead the architectural design and hands-on development of agentic AI systems for event triage.
• Build multi-agent orchestration, tool execution, complex reasoning loops, and scalable LLM workflows.
• Design stateful agent infrastructure with long-term memory, RAG, vector databases, semantic routing, and internal tool integrations.
• Integrate autonomous agents into the Waymo Driver evaluation lifecycle with cross-functional teams.
• Mentor engineers on agentic development patterns and prompt engineering.
• Break down ambiguous automation problems into multi-agent projects and lead technical roadmap execution.

Requirements

• Typically 8+ years of software engineering experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in applied LLMs and agentic AI, including multi-agent systems, reasoning engines, and autonomous workflows.
• Strong proficiency with agent orchestration frameworks and advanced prompt engineering.
• Experience executing technical strategy and developing AI-native applications in ambiguous domains.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills for aligning cross-functional stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in Computer Science with an AI/ML specialization.
• Experience building agent tools and plugins, semantic routers, and multi-agent collaboration patterns.
• Experience with autonomous vehicle simulation, testing, or evaluation.
• Proficiency in C++ and Python, plus production-grade microservices and pipelines.
• Experience with large-scale data processing, knowledge graphs, distributed systems, or Google’s and Waymo’s internal AI/ML infrastructure.
