What you will do

• Design and build the payments gateway backend for POS and Tap to Pay transactions, acting as the core authorization and routing layer.
• Verticalize partner capabilities by developing proprietary Payment SDKs and gateways to reduce third-party reliance.
• Architect systems for constrained payment environments, accounting for NFC, EMV readers, and latency-sensitive flows.
• Integrate with acquirers and networks to manage authorizations, settlements, and error handling.
• Lead long-term platform design (3–5 years) to ensure scalability and support for new products and geographies.
• Mentor senior engineers and seed domain knowledge across the organization through design reviews and whiteboard sessions.

Requirements

• Staff-level backend engineering experience with high-scale, mission-critical systems.
• Deep expertise in payments/POS/acquiring and ISO 8583 protocols.
• Proven track record designing gateways or switches connecting to multiple acquirers or processors.
• Experience with PCI DSS v4.0 compliance standards and secure CDE architecture.
• Ability to act as a technical leader and knowledge-multiplier for senior engineers.
• Must be based in or able to work in a hybrid model in Brazil (São Paulo or Belo Horizonte).

Nice to have

• Experience at companies that internalized POS/acquiring stacks (e.g., Mercado Pago, Stone, PagBank).
• Previous work on Tap to Pay or SoftPOS solutions.
• Familiarity with regulatory and compliance aspects of card-present payments in Brazil.
