What you will do
- Produce specialized research equipment using fabrication and high-precision machining by analyzing user requests and selecting suitable materials, designs, and fabrication techniques.
- Devise special test equipment and design new/prototype equipment for internal and external clients, including preparing drawings, estimating fabrication time and cost, and coordinating outside fabrication when needed.
- Capture industrial quality photographs of test procedures, equipment, installations, prototypes, and samples; process and select images for inclusion in reports.
- Recommend and source model shop equipment parts, materials, and consumables; maintain tools, jigs, instrumentation, and safety equipment.
- Provide operating instructions and guidance to other staff on shop equipment and ensure safe use by others.
Requirements
- Completion of Machinist trades qualification and 4 years of related fabrication shop experience, or completion of another formal trades qualification plus 4 years of directly relevant machining/fabricating experience.
- Good working knowledge of procedures and methods to machine and fabricate specialized research and testing equipment and components.
- Ability to estimate time and cost required for equipment fabrication.
- Good drafting skills and basic technical report writing skills.
- Working knowledge of calibrating, maintaining, and repairing machine shop instrumentation and applying accepted testing standards.
- Excellent knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations.
