Senior Software Engineer (Apache Spark)

Senior Software Engineer (Apache Spark/Java/Scala): Implementing features for hirify.global’s Data Engineering Experience and contributing to the Apache Spark open-source community with an accent on massive-scale distributed data processing. Focus on developing high-performance features, optimizing SQL Planners, and resolving failures in clusters running on thousands of nodes.

Location: Budapest, Hungary (Hybrid). This role is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

What you will do

• Implement and test features for the Data Engineering Experience on clusters with thousands of production nodes.
• Contribute to the Apache Spark open-source project to shape the future of distributed data processing.
• Develop high-performance features using Scala, Java, and Python on modern data platforms.
• Apply and expand knowledge in SQL Planners, Apache Parquet, and Apache Iceberg.
• Conduct root cause analysis and debug system-level issues to maintain high system quality.
• Improve internal infrastructure and tooling to streamline development and deployment processes.

Requirements

• 4-5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Java, Scala, or another JVM-based language.
• Proven track record of implementing high-quality features and delivering clean code.
• Experience with or a strong interest in SQL Planners and Optimizers.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for effective collaboration in a distributed team.
• Must have existing work authorization for Hungary; no immigration sponsorship is provided.

Nice to have

• Experience developing with Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, or related ecosystem technologies.
• Background in large-scale, distributed systems development.
• Prior experience as a contributor to open-source projects.
