Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Markham, Ontario, with attendance required at least three times per week

Salary: $147,000–$196,600 per year

What you will do

• Define the technical vision for AI-powered developer productivity capabilities across engineering tools and workflows.
• Design and deliver production AI solutions for code analysis, troubleshooting, test analysis, issue triage, documentation, and engineering support.
• Identify high-value AI use cases with cross-functional teams and turn them into scalable products, platforms, and reusable capabilities.
• Lead architecture and implementation decisions covering model access, orchestration, retrieval, evaluation, observability, security, and enterprise integration.
• Productionize AI capabilities across cloud services, internal platforms, CI/CD systems, and developer tools.
• Set responsible AI engineering standards, influence technical roadmaps, mentor engineers, and present recommendations to technical leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of experience in software engineering, developer tooling, platform engineering, machine learning engineering, applied AI, or a related field.
• Strong production software engineering expertise, including Python and at least one additional engineering-tooling language.
• Proven experience designing, developing, and deploying agentic AI models and autonomous, tool-using AI systems in production.
• Experience with AI and LLM-based engineering solutions, enterprise platforms, CI/CD systems, cloud services, containerization, orchestration, secure engineering, and responsible AI guardrails.
• Must be able to work from Markham, Ontario, and attend the location at least three times per week. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in computer science, software engineering, machine learning, AI, or a related field.
• Experience with embedded or automotive software, systems engineering, safety-related toolchains, CI/CD orchestration, or software quality automation.
• Experience building AI assistants, coding agents, retrieval-augmented or tool-using workflows, knowledge systems, vector search, ranking, or code intelligence platforms.
• Experience evaluating AI quality using measurable outcomes such as acceptance rate, time saved, precision and recall, hallucination reduction, or workflow completion rate.
