Backend Lead - Hands-on Tech Lead (Python)

What you will do

• Own backend technical direction, architecture, service boundaries, data ownership, APIs, integrations, and communication patterns across the product ecosystem.
• Translate product initiatives into technical designs, assess feasibility and risks, decompose work, and manage the engineering lifecycle from refinement through production improvements.
• Build scalable, reliable backend services and shared platform capabilities while remaining hands-on with Python and FastAPI through implementation, debugging, prototyping, code reviews, and research.
• Design event-driven and asynchronous workflows, including retries, idempotency, ordering, failure handling, and message processing.
• Own production readiness through monitoring, logging, alerting, SLIs/SLOs, incident response, root-cause analysis, and reliability improvements.
• Lead and develop experienced backend engineers through delegation, mentoring, feedback, performance reviews, and career development while collaborating with Product, Platform, DevOps, QA, and Frontend.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience and 2+ years in a Tech Lead, Team Lead, or Backend Lead role.
• Strong recent production experience with Python, preferably 5+ years, plus FastAPI or a similar Python web framework.
• Experience owning backend architecture for scalable, high-load, or data-intensive production systems and making pragmatic architectural decisions with stakeholders.
• Strong knowledge of asynchronous programming, distributed systems, event-driven processing, message brokers, retries, idempotency, delivery guarantees, and failure recovery.
• Strong database fundamentals with production experience in MongoDB and relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including modelling, transactions, indexing, concurrency, and performance diagnosis.
• Experience with APIs, external platforms, cloud infrastructure, containers, deployment safety, monitoring, CI/CD, incident investigation, and AI-assisted end-to-end software delivery workflows.

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-product, multi-tenant, or platform-based architectures and reusable backend frameworks or service templates.
• Experience with AWS, Redis, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Temporal, DDD, CQRS, or event sourcing.
• Background in B2C, EdTech, subscriptions, payments, analytics, mobile-first products, or early-stage product environments.
