Designer / Senior Designer (AI)

Location: Remote; strong preference for candidates in North and South American time zones, with regular overlap with US Eastern working hours. Staff attend three in-person retreats per year and should be able to travel. Access to offices in Berkeley, California is available for at least 20 days per year.

Annual salary: $100,000–$150,000 USD depending on location and experience; the practicalities section lists $100,000–$140,000 for Designer and up to $170,000 for Senior Designer. Contracts and payments are usually made in local currencies.

hirify.global is a research institute investigating trends in machine learning and the economic consequences of AI while building a publicly accessible knowledge base for policymakers, industry leaders, and society.

What you will do

• Design responsive user interfaces, graphs, dashboards, and visualizations for AI research products.
• For product and web design, develop information architecture, user flows, responsive interfaces, and design systems.
• For data visualization, create charts, interactive graphs, and visual explanations for reports, dashboards, and social media.
• Identify design solutions for user and organizational needs and create specifications, mock-ups, and prototypes.
• Maintain visual consistency and adherence to design systems.
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and communications staff to move work from concept to shipped product.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience designing interactive digital products; 5+ years for Senior Designer.
• Portfolio demonstrating strong work in UI/UX design, data visualization, or both.
• Strong grasp of typography, color, and layout.
• Ability to work comfortably in Figma, including auto-layout and components.
• Good judgment about simple, clear, and brand-consistent design.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Interest in hirify.global’s work.
• Professional-level English proficiency; application materials must be submitted in English.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with hirify.global’s research or related topics.
• Experience with scientific communication.
• Experience in illustration or branding.
• Familiarity with front-end development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Experience with Python libraries such as Matplotlib or Plotly, or other data visualization programming tools.
• Good written communication skills.
• Interest in contributing to the design library, user research, and usability testing.
