What you will do

• Lead the technical design of platform capabilities, including onboarding workflows and schema management tooling for the Event Bus.
• Establish technical standards and documented patterns for tenant integrations, including native Kafka producers and protocol-specific listeners.
• Partner with the DevOps team to identify and automate operational toil, expanding platform self-service capabilities.
• Collaborate with producer and consumer teams across the VA to convert integration lessons into repeatable platform patterns and templates.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and design feedback to raise the overall technical bar.
• Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to improved runbooks and tooling.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree and 9+ years of engineering experience (relevant experience may substitute for education).
• Expert-level capabilities in at least one major technology stack with a proven ability to lead teams.
• Strong generalist ability to read and contribute in Java, Ruby, Node, Python, or Go.
• Deep understanding of Kubernetes internals and hands-on experience with Argo CD and GitHub Actions.
• Must be based in the USA and eligible to work on US federal (VA) projects.

Nice to have

• Direct experience as a platform operator with Kafka or other distributed event platforms.
• Experience designing internal developer platforms or "paved roads" for other engineers.
• Experience navigating large, bureaucratically complex organizations in government, healthcare, or finance.
• Familiarity with FedRAMP, FISMA, and ATO compliance standards.
