Engineering Intern (Defense)

TL;DR

Engineering Intern (Defense Hardware): Supporting the Knox Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) team in developing rugged edge computing systems for airborne environments with an accent on hardware integration and lab testing. Focus on bench-level integration, 3D printing mechanical fixtures, and documenting hardware configurations for mission-critical defense applications.

Location: Must be based in San Diego, CA (Onsite)

What you will do

• Perform bench-level integration and testing of 3U OpenVPX modules and Knox chassis configurations.
• Operate lab test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators for hardware logging.
• Create mechanical fixtures and test aids using CAD models and 3D printing tools.
• Maintain integration checklists, test logs, and engineering reports using Jira.
• Support requirements traceability and participate in design reviews such as SRR, PDR, and CDR.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited Mechanical or Electrical Engineering program.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.
• Ability to work on-site in San Diego, CA.
• Basic familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360) or circuit fundamentals.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions in a laboratory environment.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with electronics or electromechanical systems via school or hobby projects.
• Proficiency with Python or MATLAB scripting.
• Experience with 3D printing hardware and slicer software like Cura or Bambu Studio.
• Familiarity with cable assembly and wiring tools such as Visio, Zuken E3, or Altium.
