What you will do

• Own the design and delivery of significant backend systems and services from data modelling to API surface.
• Lead complex, multi-sprint engineering initiatives across a product domain.
• Identify bottlenecks and execute architectural changes to scale services under production load.
• Implement distributed systems patterns including consistency, idempotency, and observability.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through rigorous code reviews.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, and domain experts to scope and ship high-value features.

Requirements

• Extensive experience as a senior backend engineer leading technical initiatives end-to-end.
• Proven track record of designing distributed systems and solving scaling problems (latency, throughput, cost).
• Expertise in designing and operating event-driven architectures with message queues or streaming systems.
• Strong proficiency in Python, modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Pydantic), and relational data modelling (SQL).
• Must be based in or able to work hybrid in London, UK.

Nice to have

• Experience with complex permissioning or fine-grained access control systems.
• Background in end-to-end document management systems and security practices.
• Experience modernizing legacy systems and migrating workloads with minimal downtime.
• Knowledge of data pipeline orchestrators.
• Experience working at AI startups and integrating LLM-based solutions.
