What you will do
- Own the design and delivery of significant backend systems and services from data modelling to API surface.
- Lead complex, multi-sprint engineering initiatives across a product domain.
- Identify bottlenecks and execute architectural changes to scale services under production load.
- Implement distributed systems patterns including consistency, idempotency, and observability.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through rigorous code reviews.
- Collaborate with Product, Data, and domain experts to scope and ship high-value features.
Requirements
- Extensive experience as a senior backend engineer leading technical initiatives end-to-end.
- Proven track record of designing distributed systems and solving scaling problems (latency, throughput, cost).
- Expertise in designing and operating event-driven architectures with message queues or streaming systems.
- Strong proficiency in Python, modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Pydantic), and relational data modelling (SQL).
- Must be based in or able to work hybrid in London, UK.
Nice to have
- Experience with complex permissioning or fine-grained access control systems.
- Background in end-to-end document management systems and security practices.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems and migrating workloads with minimal downtime.
- Knowledge of data pipeline orchestrators.
- Experience working at AI startups and integrating LLM-based solutions.
