TL;DR
R&D Engineering Intern (Embedded IoT): Researching and prototyping secure, low-power personnel tracking protocols for edge environments with an accent on mesh networking and RF link optimization. Focus on designing tracking protocols based on LoRa/Thread and evaluating lightweight cryptography for low-power MCUs.
Location: Remote (Must be a U.S. citizen)

What you will do
- Research mesh networking approaches for Denied, Disconnected, Intermittent, and Limited-bandwidth (D-DIL) environments.
- Perform comparative analysis of LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, and military tactical data link design principles.
- Draft optimized notional message formats for constrained RF links.
- Evaluate cluster formation strategies and lightweight cryptography for low-power MCUs.
- Contribute to the final technical report and the future project roadmap.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship is strictly required due to contract requirements.
- Currently pursuing a Master's Degree or late-stage BS/BA (rising senior) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Coursework or project experience in wireless communications, embedded systems, networking protocols, or applied cryptography.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python for embedded and simulation work.
- Strong technical writing skills for co-authoring technical reports.
- Ability to plan and execute weekly milestones independently in a remote setup.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with LoRa, LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, BLE, or Zigbee.
- Prototyping experience with Semtech SX126x/SX127x, ESP32, STM32, or Nordic SoCs.
- Familiarity with mesh routing, TDMA, or SDR experimentation.
- Exposure to network simulators like ns-3 or OMNeT++.
- Interest in defense applications, edge AI, or tactical networking.
