R&D Engineering Intern (Embedded IoT)

What you will do

• Research mesh networking approaches for Denied, Disconnected, Intermittent, and Limited-bandwidth (D-DIL) environments.
• Perform comparative analysis of LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, and military tactical data link design principles.
• Draft optimized notional message formats for constrained RF links.
• Evaluate cluster formation strategies and lightweight cryptography for low-power MCUs.
• Contribute to the final technical report and the future project roadmap.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is strictly required due to contract requirements.
• Currently pursuing a Master's Degree or late-stage BS/BA (rising senior) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Coursework or project experience in wireless communications, embedded systems, networking protocols, or applied cryptography.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python for embedded and simulation work.
• Strong technical writing skills for co-authoring technical reports.
• Ability to plan and execute weekly milestones independently in a remote setup.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with LoRa, LoRaWAN, Meshtastic, Thread, BLE, or Zigbee.
• Prototyping experience with Semtech SX126x/SX127x, ESP32, STM32, or Nordic SoCs.
• Familiarity with mesh routing, TDMA, or SDR experimentation.
• Exposure to network simulators like ns-3 or OMNeT++.
• Interest in defense applications, edge AI, or tactical networking.
