Principal Software Engineer (Developer Experience)

TL;DR

Principal Software Engineer (Developer Experience): Defining and driving developer productivity metrics, golden paths, and AI-integrated workflows across GM's engineering organization with an accent on platform strategy, automation, and insights from SDLC systems. Focus on embedding AI agents into engineering processes, shaping standards, and influencing leadership through data-driven recommendations.

Remote (US only) or hybrid in Warren, MI or Austin, TX offices. No immigration sponsorship (H-1B, TN, STEM OPT, etc.).

What you will do

• Set technical strategy for platforms, tools, and workflows improving developer productivity, quality, and satisfaction.
• Define and drive adoption of golden paths for repo structure, CI/CD, testing, security, observability, and deployment.
• Build automation and self-service capabilities reducing manual toil like environment provisioning and pipeline setup.
• Lead strategy for embedding AI into workflows, including agents and copilots for coding, testing, and operations.
• Partner with product, security, and infra leaders to translate pain points into platform improvements.
• Define outcome-focused metrics like lead time for changes and use data to guide investments; mentor engineers org-wide.

Requirements

• 10+ years software development experience, including senior/staff/principal roles.
• Proficiency in modern language (Java, Go, C#, Python, TypeScript) and distributed systems.
• Deep experience with modern CI/CD pipelines, release processes, and SDLC tooling (GitHub/GitLab, Jira/ADO, etc.).
• Proven technical leadership, systems thinking, AI mindset, and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in platform engineering, SRE, or internal developer platforms.
• Background in regulated/safety-critical environments with security and compliance focus.
• Prior work in Developer Experience / Productivity / DevTools.
