Principal Engineer (AI)

TL;DR

Principal Engineer (AI/DevOps): Own technical standards, architecture patterns, and programming practices for Epic's internal IT engineering with an accent on AI-assisted development processes, production systems, and operational maturity. Focus on building AI-powered systems including RAG architectures, LLM integrations, agentic workflows, driving CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and mentoring across teams on complex distributed systems.

What you will do

• Own technical standards, best practices, and architectural guidance across multiple teams
• Step into highest-priority projects for hands-on programming to ensure successful delivery
• Partner with team leads to elevate design, code quality, and delivery processes
• Drive programming direction using AI tools like Claude Code, cloud infrastructure, and LLM primitives
• Direct AI development tools for code building, testing, reviewing, and debugging to unblock teams
• Enhance operational maturity in CI/CD, testing, observability, infrastructure-as-code, and tool adoption
• Mentor programmers in software and AI development; represent technical direction to executives

Requirements

• 7+ years professional software programming experience as senior IC or technical lead
• Deep expertise in Python and Golang for production systems; strong AWS experience with Terraform
• Practical experience building AI systems: RAG, prompt programming, LLM integrations, agentic workflows
• DevOps skills: CI/CD (GitHub Actions), Docker, Kubernetes, automated testing, release management
• Experience with distributed systems, APIs, service deployments in production
• Ability to context-switch between strategic leadership and hands-on coding
• Skills in setting standards across teams without direct authority; strong communication
• Comfort with ambiguity and changing domains
