What you will do

• Design, build, and evolve scalable backend services and APIs in Kotlin and Java, focusing on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Develop core platform capabilities including organizational resource hierarchies and access policies.
• Partner with adjacent teams to integrate with authentication, storage, billing, and other shared systems.
• Write technical designs, break down problems, and drive projects from concept to production rollout.
• Own full delivery lifecycle including schema design, migrations, testing, deployment, observability, and operational readiness.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues in distributed services involving MySQL/Vitess and cross-service dependencies.
• Improve security, correctness, and developer velocity using automation and AI-assisted tools.
• Contribute to engineering excellence through code/design reviews, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend services.
• Strong experience with Java and/or Kotlin in production.
• Experience designing APIs and service interfaces including compatibility, migrations, and rollouts.
• Experience with scalable distributed systems and production debugging.
• Strong data modeling and relational database development with MySQL or similar.
• Experience with containerized environments, observability tools, and secure system design.
• Demonstrated ability to lead full software development lifecycle and communicate effectively across teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with Protocol Buffers, gRPC, Vitess, or sharded SQL systems.
• Building identity, access management, policy, or authorization systems.
• Working across polyglot stack including TypeScript clients.
• Using AI-assisted tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or Gemini.
• Mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction.
