TL;DR

Advanced Cell Engineer - Cell Diagnostics/Components (Battery): Lead development and optimization of cell designs for next-generation electric vehicles with an accent on performance, durability, safety, DC fast charge, and cost targets. Focus on designing diagnostic experiments, analyzing degradation mechanisms, and translating learnings into design rules using physico-chemical techniques and multi-factor data analysis.

Onsite: Report to Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC) in Warren, Michigan full-time (5 days/week). Travel <25%. Eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do

  • Lead cell design optimization including electrode loading, electrolyte systems, and geometry to meet performance and cost targets.
  • Define DC fast charge protocols, execute diagnostics like rate/temperature studies, impedance analysis, and post-mortem characterization.
  • Design experiments with three-electrode setups to isolate anode/cathode behavior and track lithium inventory under aggressive conditions.
  • Analyze complex data sets to identify drivers, quantify trade-offs, and propose corrective actions at material/electrode/cell levels.
  • Act as technical owner for cell designs, mentor junior staff, and collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, engineering, and suppliers.
  • Champion safety, maintain standards, and drive improvements in test methods and workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 5+ years relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of cell technology, design, and manufacturing; structure-property-process relationships in electrodes.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical skills for complex problems; excellent communication for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to lead without authority in fast-paced, cross-functional teams.

Nice to have

  • Master’s, PhD, or advanced certifications.
  • Hands-on with EIS, GITT, cyclic voltammetry, XRD, SEM/EDS, XPS, tomography.
  • Experience with pouch cells, high-nickel cathodes, silicon anodes, next-gen electrolytes.
