TL;DR

R&D Communications Engineer (Space): Participate in advanced R&D projects for new technology development and next-generation lunar transportation system architecture with an accent on RF and Optical Communications tradespace modeling using Python-based analytical tools. Focus on defining subsystem architectures, performing link-budget evaluations, and integrating technologies into lander, orbiter, and rover missions.

What you will do

  • Define, analyze, and evaluate RF and Optical Communications subsystem architectures for future missions, including equipment selection, trade studies, and full RF link-budget evaluations.
  • Develop and maintain Python-based analytical models for tradespace exploration, subsystem sizing, and architecture evaluation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Japan, EU, and US offices on conceptual system design and mission architecture.
  • Provide technical leadership in communications R&D tasks with clear documentation of models and results.
  • Support communications-related R&D projects, technology demonstrations, and customer development activities.

Requirements

  • BSc or Master's degree or experience in RF/optical communications for spacecraft design.
  • Five or more years of experience with RF and/or Optical communications system analysis, link-budget creation, tradeoffs in bands, modulations, coding, and BER impact.
  • 3 years of experience with modeling programming languages (Python: NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib or strong MATLAB).

Nice to have

  • Experience in interoperable nodes constellation design (intersatellite links, PNT, communication coverage).
  • Experience with modeling and optimization tools (GMAT, STK, link budget simulation libraries).
  • Systems engineering experience using Model Based Systems Engineering approach.
  • Understanding of communications regulations (ITU, SFCG).
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, ambiguous conceptual environments with proactive technical ownership.
