TL;DR
Research Integrity Lead (Publishing Ethics): Establishing and embedding best-practice frameworks to prevent, detect, and manage integrity risks throughout the publication lifecycle with an accent on paper mills, peer-review manipulation, data fabrication, and AI misuse. Focus on advising leadership, supporting complex case investigations, and promoting preventive integrity culture aligned with COPE and industry standards.
Location: Hybrid (8 days/month) in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands

What you will do
- Define and maintain research integrity framework covering screening, investigations, and post-publication actions.
- Provide operational guidance, escalation pathways, and decision frameworks for publishers and editors.
- Advise senior leadership on emerging risks, resourcing, and reputational exposure.
- Lead investigations of complex cases like paper mills, data fabrication, image manipulation, and AI concerns.
- Drive adoption of integrity screening tools and update policies on ethics and AI use.
- Develop training, represent in industry forums, and monitor external developments.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in STM publishing, research integrity, or publication ethics.
- Demonstrated expertise in misconduct investigations and complex judgement-based cases.
- Strong knowledge of COPE Core Practices, STM guidance, and correction/retraction workflows.
- Experience advising editors, publishers, legal, and operations on integrity issues.
- Ability to influence without formal authority through expertise.
- Availability to travel globally (<10%).
Nice to have
- Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in Health, Medical discipline, research methods, or information science.
- Participation in cross-industry integrity initiatives.
- Experience with integrity screening tools and portfolio-level policies.
- Prior experience in publisher, editorial leadership, or research administration.
