Staff Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid work with onsite attendance three days per week

Salary: $244,000–$305,000 annually for Tier 1, SF Bay Area

What you will do

• Define AI quality and evaluation strategies for LLM and agentic systems, including automated graders, regression testing, human evaluation, failure taxonomies, and offline-to-online validation.
• Identify production failure modes and lead improvements across prompting, retrieval, context, routing, data, and post-training.
• Advance supervised fine-tuning, preference optimization, reinforcement learning, distillation, and synthetic-data capabilities.
• Architect production agentic systems covering tool use, retrieval, state management, orchestration, tracing, and failure recovery.
• Build feedback loops that convert production failures and user feedback into better datasets, evaluations, and model behavior.
• Shape the AI roadmap, lead technical reviews, mentor engineers, and establish reusable frameworks and best practices.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in production machine learning, research engineering, or applied AI.
• Deep expertise with modern LLMs, transformers, complex production AI systems, and evaluation of LLMs or agents.
• Experience architecting systems with multiple models, tools, retrieval, routing, orchestration, tracing, and failure recovery.
• Hands-on proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks; PyTorch is preferred.
• Experience with MLOps, CI/CD, observability, containerized deployments, datasets, feedback loops, and active learning.
• Strong technical communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with clinicians, product managers, researchers, and engineers.

• Experience with realtime voice, conversational AI, or multimodal systems.
• Healthcare, clinical AI, or other regulated and high-stakes industry experience.
• Experience interviewing or hiring machine learning engineers.
• Open-source contributions to ML, agent, evaluation, or post-training tooling.
