TL;DR
Engineering Manager (AI): Leading the Maquina team to build and scale AI-powered customer service procedures with an accent on Retrieval Augmented Generation and autonomous agent workflows. Focus on driving technical direction, managing team delivery, and fostering high-performance engineering culture in Lisbon.
Location: Must be based in Lisbon, Portugal (Hybrid: 2+ days/week in office required)

What you will do
- Lead, grow, and mentor a team of engineers through regular coaching, feedback, and career development.
- Partner with Product and Tech leads to plan and execute the AI procedures roadmap, from recommendation engines to autonomous agent execution.
- Manage end-to-end delivery including capacity planning, sprint health, and shipping cadence.
- Drive operational excellence through incident response and continuous process improvement.
- Foster a diverse and inclusive team culture focused on technical craft and psychological safety.
- Collaborate with global engineering leadership to align on dependencies and architectural decisions.
Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of software engineering management experience, including hiring and performance management.
- Background as an individual contributor with the ability to participate in architectural discussions and code reviews.
- Proven experience delivering products in an Agile environment with clear delivery metrics.
- Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience managing teams across different locations or time zones.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with AI/ML-powered product development and language models.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, cloud services, and microservice architectures.
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes, Kafka, and AWS ecosystems.
