Senior Rust Developer (Computational Biology)

Location: Remote for talent in GMT-8 to GMT+5 time zones, with 3–4 hours of overlap with Chicago/Texas (US Central Time); candidates in China, Australia, and similar time zones are not eligible.

Engagement length: 6 months, with potential for extension.

hirify.global is hiring through the Toptal department for a computational biology project focused on scalable, open-source workflow execution technology.

What you will do

• Develop and enhance the Sprocket workflow execution engine and related Rust crates, including wdl, sprocket, and crankshaft.
• Improve and extend the Workflow Description Language specification by proposing, drafting, and shepherding changes through ratification.
• Collaborate on the evolution of the Task Execution Schema with standards bodies and the open-source community.
• Develop and maintain reference implementations with comprehensive OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
• Communicate progress and coordinate with the computational biology team.

Requirements

• 6+ years of senior-level Rust experience shipping production code.
• Experience contributing to or leading open-source projects.
• Familiarity with workflow engines, scientific computing, or large-scale computation.
• Experience with Rust crates for lexing, parsing, validation, linting, formatting, testing, and executing domain-specific languages.
• Strong API design and specification development skills, plus experience using GitHub for project planning and collaboration.
• Availability for the stated time-zone overlap and location restrictions.

Nice to have

• Experience developing or improving specifications with OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Familiarity with WDL and TES.
• Experience with Kubernetes or cloud/HPC environments.
• Involvement with standards bodies such as GA4GH.
• Experience with Rust crates such as utoipa for OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
