Staff Engineer (Backend)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, United States; office attendance required 3 days per week, with Mondays and Wednesdays as anchor days.

Salary: $230,000–$350,000 annually for Tier 1 (San Francisco), plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead development of core document viewing, editing, embeds, and export features in a Django monolith.
• Improve performance and scalability by optimizing database queries, endpoints, and caching layers.
• Partner with product and design to deliver reliable editing and rendering experiences at scale.
• Decide when to extend the monolith and when to extract services for high-scale systems.
• Raise engineering standards through code reviews, mentorship, testing, observability, and performance practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building high-scale, highly available backend applications.
• Deep, extensive experience with Python.
• Experience optimizing endpoint performance and database queries.
• Strong advocacy for automated testing and practical engineering best practices.

Nice to have

• Experience with Django.
• Startup experience.
