Payments Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Madrid, Spain, or able to travel to Madrid when needed; telework is available

What you will do

• Develop and maintain APIs and backend services for payment products.
• Integrate and optimize third-party payment gateways for secure transaction processing and regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with product managers, product designers, and frontend/mobile engineers on payment solutions.
• Improve backend performance and responsiveness for frontend requests.
• Maintain code quality through reviews, profiling, optimization, and engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Senior-level backend engineering experience with extensive API design and development experience.
• Payment gateway integration and secure transaction processing experience are required.
• Knowledge of web protocols, system architecture, database design, and web server optimization.
• Experience with Spring Boot 3, Java 17, MongoDB, MySQL/Aurora, and Kubernetes is preferred.
• Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Must be located in Madrid or able to travel to Madrid when needed; excellent spoken and written English is required.

Nice to have

• Experience designing payment systems or financial platforms.
• Experience with remote, partially remote, and multicultural teams.
• Startup or scale-up experience.
