Director of Engineering | Growth & Transformation (AI)

Location: Hybrid schedule based in the South Charlotte, NC or New York, NY office.

Total cash compensation: $145,000–$260,000 per year. New York City total cash compensation: $181,250–$325,000 per year. Equity is offered separately.

What you will do

• Lead, coach, and grow engineering managers and tech leads while maintaining accountability for delivery, quality, team health, hiring, retention, and succession planning.
• Set the engineering strategy, roadmap, operating rhythm, and standards for coding agents and agentic workflows.
• Serve as the senior engineering partner to client executives across product, technology, and data, translating objectives and experimentation insights into measurable technical roadmaps.
• Guide architecture and delivery across React, Next.js, Go, AWS, and Terraform-based systems, reviewing designs and stepping in hands-on when needed.
• Lead deployments, incidents, sensitive partner discussions, and resolution of issues involving partner teams and vendors.
• Ensure contractual, security, privacy, consent, accessibility, audit, and data-handling obligations are met while sharing reusable components across engineering teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years leading engineering teams and at least 2 years managing managers or tech leads.
• Strong foundation in modern web, cloud, and distributed systems, including digital acquisition and conversion experiences such as funnels, checkout and application flows, partner integrations, experimentation, and compliance in the flow.
• Enough depth in React, Next.js, Go, AWS, and Terraform to evaluate designs and contribute when required.
• Strategic judgment with the ability to connect technical decisions to business impact and explain trade-offs to executives in plain terms.
• Experience owning client or partner relationships, including crises and sensitive conversations, ideally in a services, agency, or partner-facing environment.
• Familiarity with agentic systems and AI-assisted development, including evals, guardrails, clear specifications, and mentoring others in this workflow.
• Experience building and scaling engineering organizations through hiring, performance management, and leader development.
• Experience with contractual and regulatory obligations including SLAs, audit, OWASP, WCAG, and GDPR/CCPA, ideally in financial services.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for design documents and updates aimed at business and technical readers.
