TL;DR
Failure Analysis Engineer (H/F) (Quantum Computing): Monitoring failure mechanisms in superconducting chip production and identifying root causes through electrical, visual, SEM, and AFM analysis with an accent on semiconductor fabrication, materials characterization, and yield improvement. Focus on correlating process steps with defects, building failure-analysis knowledge systems, and driving corrective actions with process integration, development, and production engineering teams.
Location: Hybrid in Aubervilliers, France; flexible remote work is available up to 40% per month.
Company
Alice & Bob is an early-stage French startup developing a universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer based on superconducting Schrödinger cat qubits.
What you will do
Monitor known and potential failure mechanisms across the chip production process and run failure analysis on identified cases.
Generate, organize, and maintain failure-analysis data and databases, then synthesize progress for stakeholders.
Use electrical and visual inspection tools, SEM including EDX/EDS, and AFM to characterize defects and materials.
Build a failure-analysis knowledge hub through external expert networks, test-tool evaluation, and methodology reviews.
Identify root causes and correlations between process steps, then propose corrective actions with process integration, process development, and production engineering teams.
Collaborate with QHI teams, Chip Design Implementation, and external failure-analysis laboratories.
Requirements
Master of Engineering or equivalent university degree in physics, materials science, electronics, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in failure analysis or a related field.
Strong knowledge of IC fabrication flows, including front-end and back-end, with the ability to identify which process step may introduce a defect.
Hands-on experience with electrical testing, SEM including EDX/EDS for elemental composition, and AFM for surface topography.
Good communication skills and the ability to cooperate across teams.
Proficient in English.
Quantum-technology experience is not required; relevant failure-analysis expertise may come from semiconductors, microelectronics, or advanced materials.
Nice to have
Understanding of packaging and assembly, including wire bonds, flip-chip or bump bonds, and TSVs.
Knowledge of metallurgy and intermetallic compound formation.
Knowledge of fracture mechanics, fatigue, and thermal-expansion effects such as CTE mismatch.
Culture & Benefits
CDI employment with a flexible remote-work policy allowing up to 40% remote work per month.
BSPCE plan and additional compensation for contributions to core patents.
25 days of vacation under French law plus RTT, transportation-cost coverage or a bicycle allowance.
Health coverage with Alan, meal vouchers with Swile, and a stocked kitchen.
Parental benefits including crèche support or additional days off, mental-health support, sports-club membership, and French-language courses.
Collaborative, learning-oriented environment with opportunities to develop new ideas and grow within an innovative quantum-computing startup.
Hiring process
30-minute screening call with Talent Acquisition.
45-minute hiring-manager interview, followed by a 90-minute technical case study prepared and presented on site.
60-minute leadership and fit interview; nothing is required in advance for the case study.
