Software Engineer III, Simulation (Robotics)

Location: Hybrid, three days on-site per week at an office in Fremont, CA; Salem, OR; or Pittsburgh, PA. All roles are U.S.-based, and applicants must have current authorization to work in the United States.

Anticipated salary range: $144,000–$225,000 USD annually.

What you will do

• Design, build, and own core components of the simulation stack as a founding member of the Simulation team.
• Develop the hardware abstraction layer connecting sensors, actuators, physical hardware, and simulation environments.
• Integrate physics simulators and build high-fidelity robot models covering kinematics, dynamics, mass properties, actuators, transmissions, and contact behavior.
• Build automated pipelines from hardware design through robot modeling and system identification so new hardware can be used rapidly in simulation.
• Use simulation to train reinforcement-learning policies, generate synthetic data, evaluate end-to-end models, and assess proposed robot designs.
• Validate simulation models against physical hardware data and turn design trade-study results into recommendations.

Requirements

• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience in robotics, simulation, or an adjacent industry, or a PhD in robotics or computer science.
• Strong proficiency in modern C++ and Python.
• Experience with at least one major robotics physics simulator, such as MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, Gazebo, or a similar tool.
• Experience building rigid-body robot models using URDF, MJCF, USD, or similar formats.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and compute at scale.
• Working knowledge of Git, CI/CD, Jira or an equivalent tool, and feature branching.
• Ability to collaborate across hardware and software teams, translate between technical vocabularies, and drive ambiguous problems to working solutions with minimal direction.
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience with humanoid or legged robots.
• Experience with CAD-to-simulation pipelines, including Onshape, SolidWorks, or Creo exports.
• Experience with system identification or parameter estimation from hardware data.
• Mechanical engineering or mechatronics experience alongside software development.
• Advanced-degree research in simulation, multibody dynamics, or robot modeling.
• Experience using simulation to train and evaluate policies.
