Staff Software Engineer (Data Governance & Trust)

Location: San Mateo, CA, US; subject to SIE's hybrid working policy

Base pay: $216,200–$324,400 USD annually

What you will do

• Set the architecture and technical roadmap for Data Governance and Trust, leading initiatives from discovery through production operation and adoption.
• Design and build services, integrations, APIs, and automation connecting metadata, ownership, classification, lineage, quality signals, and policy information.
• Embed trust requirements into data publishing, discovery, access, consumption, change, and retirement workflows.
• Represent the group in architecture and leadership discussions, align stakeholders, document decisions, and resolve competing priorities.
• Translate governance, security, privacy, and domain requirements into implementable controls, data contracts, quality expectations, and remediation workflows.
• Prepare governed data and context for applications and AI, while mentoring engineers and raising standards for reliability, testing, observability, and documentation.

Requirements

• Track record designing, building, and operating production software or data platforms with impact across multiple teams.
• Deep practical knowledge of metadata management, data governance, lineage, data quality, privacy engineering, access controls, or related platform domains.
• Hands-on experience building or extending metadata and catalog platforms such as Atlan, Alation, DataHub, OpenMetadata, or comparable systems.
• Understanding of federated ownership models, data stewardship, semantic models, business glossaries, or certified metrics.
• Experience across warehouse, lakehouse, streaming, and data transformation environments.
• Demonstrated delivery of data contracts, automated lineage, quality checks, or policy as code.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business or policy requirements into technical designs and lead initiatives across teams without direct reporting authority.
• Strong communication skills for architecture proposals, decision documents, presentations, stakeholder alignment, and difficult technical or organizational conversations.
• Collaborative approach, shared accountability, and demonstrated commitment to mentoring engineers and improving team effectiveness.

Nice to have

• Strong software engineering skills in Python, Java, or Go, plus practical SQL experience.
• Experience with distributed systems, APIs, integrations, cloud data infrastructure, reliability, consistency, security, and failure handling.
• Experience implementing controls that generate operational evidence and delivering governed data or context services for analytics, applications, machine learning, or AI agents.
• Experience leading platform adoption, modernization, or migration across organizational boundaries.
• Experience presenting technical work through internal forums, technical writing, communities of practice, or external presentations.
