Staff Software Engineer, Pentest Experience (Cybersecurity)

Location: US, Remote; up to 10% travel may be required for project kickoffs and the annual company gathering.

Base salary: $230,000–$270,000 per year, with additional equity in the form of stock options.

What you will do

• Own the technical direction of Assessment Experience backend systems from concept through long-term evolution.
• Design and build scalable backend services, APIs, data models, and asynchronous or event-driven workflows for configuring assessments and consuming results.
• Lead architecture decisions across reliability, data correctness, performance, maintainability, extensibility, and operability.
• Translate customer and product goals into technical strategy, architecture, and execution plans with Product, Design, and engineering leadership.
• Drive cross-team work with attack content, integrations, and asset-matching teams, while contributing production code and setting standards for testing, observability, and safe rollouts.
• Mentor engineers, communicate technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, support hiring, and evaluate emerging technologies including AI-driven approaches.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including sustained ownership of production backend systems.
• Experience building backend services in at least one modern language such as Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
• Strong SQL skills and production experience with a relational database, including complex joins, CTEs, window functions, and deliberate schema design.
• Experience building cloud backend services on AWS, GCP, or Azure, with familiarity with Docker and containerized applications.
• Experience designing and operating APIs, services, asynchronous or event-driven systems, and product-grade data models and persistence layers.
• Operational maturity in observability, testing, reliability practices, and debugging difficult customer-visible production problems.
• Experience producing technical design documents, architectural proposals, or engineering standards adopted by other teams.
• Track record of leading cross-team technical work, mentoring engineers, influencing technical direction, and communicating clearly with non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience building or consuming GraphQL backends, using graph databases such as Neo4j, or working with ETL and streaming data pipelines.
• Experience with observability stacks such as Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana and service instrumentation.
• Experience leading API platform, workflow-oriented customer experience, AI-assisted, or conversational product initiatives.
• Experience with feature flags, staged rollouts, and customer feedback loops.
• Experience in vulnerability management, exposure management, security SaaS, penetration testing products, security findings workflows, or other high-stakes security data.
• Experience partnering with product managers on MVP definition and sequencing, and defining technical standards adopted beyond the immediate team.
