Scientist, Analytical Ops - Mass Spectrometry

Location: United States — California — Santa Monica; onsite required

Salary: $133,195–$172,370 per year, plus potential discretionary bonus, stock-based long-term incentives, paid time off, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and execute mass spectrometry studies assessing viral vector and cell therapy final-product attributes.
• Characterize host cell proteins, post-translational modifications, and relative protein abundance in biological samples.
• Develop and apply mass spectrometry methods; troubleshoot instrumentation, sample preparation, and data-processing workflows.
• Analyze complex datasets, interpret results, and present conclusions and recommendations to cross-functional teams.
• Author, review, and edit study plans, SOPs, protocols, reports, and other technical documentation.
• Collaborate with Cell and Vector Attribute Sciences teams to advance product-characterization and product-knowledge strategies while maintaining a safe, compliant laboratory environment.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related discipline; alternatively, a master’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of relevant experience.
• Ability to independently plan and execute defined studies and method-development activities using established and emerging methods.
• Ability to interpret results, identify trends and limitations, communicate scientifically sound conclusions, and own assigned deliverables, timelines, documentation, and partner coordination.
• Ability to present results clearly and author high-quality technical documentation.

Nice to have

• 3+ years of hands-on experience applying mass spectrometry to proteomics and protein-characterization applications.
• Experience operating multiple mass spectrometry platforms and analyzing their data.
• Experience with host cell protein profiling, post-translational modification characterization, and relative protein quantitation workflows.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis of large proteomics datasets using appropriate software and workflows.
• Experience with viral vectors, biologics, cell therapy products, or other complex biological matrices.
• Experience with orthogonal particle-characterization technologies such as DLS, NTA, electron microscopy, or flow imaging.
• Knowledge of analytical development, method qualification, data integrity, and documentation in a regulated biopharmaceutical environment.
• Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation skills; self-motivated, detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable in a dynamic environment.
