Sr. Specialist - Embedded Software Developer (Embedded Linux)

Location: Onsite in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain Yocto/OpenEmbedded layers, recipes, images, root filesystems, custom BSPs, and distribution configurations for electro-optical surveillance systems.
• Lead board bring-up on new hardware platforms, including CBoot and UEFI bootloaders, Linux kernel configuration, device trees, and driver integration.
• Develop Docker container images for application deployment, platform configuration, and system integration.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, electro-optics, and systems engineering teams; support manufacturing and customer support through troubleshooting and issue resolution.
• Produce technical documentation, participate in design and code reviews, and contribute to planning, estimation, scheduling, risk assessment, and project execution.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and support refactoring, test development, and engineering guideline initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience, a graduate degree with at least 4 years of related experience, or at least 10 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
• Strong knowledge of embedded Linux, including Linux kernel architecture, system internals, userspace components, shell scripting, and development tooling.
• Hands-on experience with Yocto Project/OpenEmbedded recipes, custom layers, images, SDKs, and machine or distribution configurations.
• Strong understanding of root filesystem design, including systemd, package management, ext4, overlayfs, partitioning, and filesystem architectures.
• Experience with CBoot or UEFI, Linux kernel configuration, device tree development, driver integration, hardware bring-up, platform integration, and system validation.
• Experience with embedded C and/or C++, Arm processors, FPGA-based systems, RTOS platforms such as ThreadX or vxWorks, and embedded interfaces including I2C, SPI, CAN, or Ethernet.
• Experience with Docker, containerized deployment, OTA update solutions such as Mender, RAUC, or SWUpdate, and automated testing for embedded systems.
• Experience with Python scripting, video or image processing, tracking or detection algorithms, avionics or defense applications, simulation or emulation, development toolchains, source control, complex software architectures, Windows and Linux host environments, and Agile methodologies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, plus experience leading the technical aspects of software development projects.
• Must be eligible for registration with Canada’s Controlled Goods Program and obtain and maintain a positive security assessment. Some positions may require Government of Canada Reliability status and/or Level 2 Secret clearance.
