Senior Staff Software Engineer (Fintech)

Location: Vancouver, Canada; hybrid work requires in-person attendance at the Vancouver office 2 days per week

Canada base salary: $279,000–$341,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Own the technical vision, system architecture, and multi-year roadmap for Live Pay and the hirify.global Card.
• Architect card authorization, processing, ledgering, funding, balance management, settlement, reconciliation, credit reporting, and card experience backends.
• Lead integrations with the core card platform, issuing banks, Visa, processors, and partner APIs or file-based interfaces.
• Act as the final architectural authority, lead design reviews and technical RFCs, and drive complex initiatives across multiple teams.
• Set standards for reliability, observability, SLOs, incident response, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and production readiness.
• Mentor senior engineers, shape cross-company technical strategy, and lead responsible adoption of AI and agentic engineering workflows.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with progression into Staff or Senior Staff technical leadership and architectural ownership.
• Experience serving as a lead architect or technical authority for large-scale distributed systems and leading delivery across multiple engineering teams without direct authority.
• Deep hands-on experience designing and operating highly available, low-latency backend systems, preferably in payments, banking, card, or other regulated environments.
• Experience with card issuing, processing, authorization, processors, issuing banks, card networks, ledgering, balance management, settlement, reconciliation, or payment partner integrations.
• Working knowledge of authorization and clearing flows, ISO 8583 or equivalent formats, certification, chargebacks, disputes, and PCI DSS-related compliance.
• Experience designing consumer-facing backend services and APIs for onboarding, account management, or card management flows.
• Strong understanding of idempotency, eventual consistency, exactly-once semantics, data integrity, and auditability in distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in Kotlin or another modern JVM language such as Java or Scala, plus REST APIs, SQL/NoSQL stores, Kafka or equivalent streaming platforms, Kubernetes, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with SLOs, observability, incident response, capacity planning, disaster recovery, production reliability, AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, and AI development tools.
• Exceptional architectural judgment, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to mentor senior technical talent and communicate with engineering, product, risk, and executive audiences.

Nice to have

• Experience with credit reporting or consumer data furnishing, including Metro 2, accuracy controls, disputes, and corrections.
• Experience in FinTech, payments, banking, or other compliance-sensitive environments.
