Protection & Controls Engineering Manager

Location: US-TX-Austin, United States. Occasional travel may be needed, up to 10%.

What you will do

• Lead protection and control engineering and design for EPC and private-client projects involving substations, data centers, generation, BESS, and other large-load facilities.
• Develop and review P&C drawing packages, protection philosophies, relay settings, coordination studies, and equipment-duty calculations.
• Coordinate P&C designs with multidisciplinary engineering teams, EPC contractors, vendors, clients, and interconnecting utilities.
• Support projects through construction, testing, commissioning, and energization, including field issue resolution and testing documentation review.
• Provide technical QA/QC, maintain engineering standards and methodologies, and improve quality and efficiency through standardization, automation, and responsible AI use.
• Mentor and supervise P&C engineers and designers while supporting proposals, project planning, client discussions, and business development.

Requirements

• Licensed Professional Engineer required.
• 10+ years of protection and control engineering experience, preferably in consulting, EPC, or detailed design environments.
• Strong background in substation P&C design and protective relaying for medium- and high-voltage systems.
• Experience with protection tools and relay software including ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, Powerbase, SEL Quickset, and GE Enervista.
• Experience developing and reviewing complete P&C design packages from conceptual design through IFC.
• Strong knowledge of protective relay applications, settings, and coordination, plus familiarity with applicable IEEE, ANSI, NERC, and utility requirements.
• Experience coordinating P&C design across multidisciplinary EPC projects and managing multiple projects amid changing priorities.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineers and designers, with strong client-facing communication, technical leadership, and teamwork skills.
• Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity, and innovation.

Nice to have

• Experience with data centers, BESS, generation, or other large-load and industrial facilities.
• Experience with inverter-based power plants.
• Experience supporting construction, testing, and commissioning.
