Principal Ruby Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Define technical strategy, architecture, and modernization initiatives for the Composer platform.
• Lead decoupling and migration from legacy dependencies while maintaining platform stability.
• Improve reliability, scalability, observability, performance, and operational resilience.
• Establish standards for instrumentation, monitoring, alerting, system performance, and release readiness.
• Lead architecture reviews, technical decisions, code reviews, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Mentor engineers and use AI-assisted development tools to navigate, modernize, and evolve the codebase.

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including the last 3+ years at Principal, Staff, or Architect level as an individual contributor owning technical direction across several teams.
• 7+ years of expert Ruby on Rails experience on large, long-lived, multi-tenant codebases, including major Ruby and Rails upgrades on a live system.
• Experience incrementally modernizing a legacy monolith while continuing to ship, including module boundaries, service extraction, dependency removal, and data migrations.
• Production ownership covering incidents, root-cause analysis, observability and alerting standards, and release readiness on a fixed cadence.
• Production AWS experience with EC2, Kubernetes, and managed databases, plus close collaboration with infrastructure teams on CI/CD, scaling, and security.
• Practical security and compliance experience, including vulnerability remediation against deadlines, backend RBAC and data access rules, and audit requirements.
• Deep PostgreSQL or MySQL expertise, including query performance on large tables, indexing, and large data migrations.
• Working knowledge of React and TypeScript sufficient to review and guide frontend work.
• Daily use of Claude Code or similar AI coding agents, including setting them up for teams working on legacy codebases.
• Client-facing technical leadership presenting architecture trade-offs, estimates, and risks to executive and engineering stakeholders and defending recommendations.
• Advanced English (C1), written and spoken.

• FedRAMP, SOC 2, or other regulated or government cloud experience.
• Experience building LLM features or MCP servers on existing products.
• Java, Elixir, Python, or Django experience.
• Experience with ETL pipelines, data warehouses, or Starburst/Trino.
• HR tech, recruiting, CRM, or scheduling domain experience.
• Consulting experience conducting technical assessments and scoping fixed-price work.
