Senior Engineer, IVV & SW O-RAN Integration, IRIS2 (5G NTN)

Location: Betzdorf, Luxembourg; 60% onsite from the office. Travel is required as needed for project realization.

SES operates satellite communications services and is building and operating the IRIS² secure European Union multi-orbit satellite constellation with consortium partners.

What you will do

• Define and execute IVV plans for feeder-link software integration, including test strategies, cases, procedures, acceptance criteria, and defect follow-up.
• Integrate O-RAN components and interfaces across RAN, gateway, software, and system engineering teams.
• Validate 5G radio protocol behavior across PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, SDAP, and RRC layers in NTN feeder-link environments.
• Prepare and execute functional, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests in laboratories and representative NTN environments.
• Troubleshoot and analyze logs, traces, counters, and KPIs, and contribute to technical requirements, RFPs, RFQs, supplier evaluations, and acceptance definitions.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in engineering or science, preferably telecommunications, radio communications, software engineering, or a related discipline.
• Telecom or satellite communications industry experience; 7+ to 10+ years of relevant industry experience is preferred for the Senior Engineer level.
• Strong knowledge of 5G radio protocols, especially PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, SDAP, and RRC, including analysis through logs, traces, counters, and test results.
• Experience with software integration, verification, validation, and testing of telecom or RAN systems, preferably in 5G, O-RAN, or NTN environments.
• Hands-on IVV experience covering test planning, test-case definition, execution, anomaly reporting, root-cause analysis, and acceptance evidence preparation.
• Understanding of 5G RAN protocol behavior, including segmentation, retransmission, scheduling interaction, buffering, ciphering, and header compression.
• Knowledge of 5G NTN constraints introduced by satellite links, including delay, Doppler, feeder-link behavior, gateway involvement, and link-budget impacts.
• Experience with multi-vendor software integration, interface validation, version alignment, configuration management, supplier defect tracking, requirements traceability, test coverage, regression strategy, lab readiness, test automation, and formal acceptance criteria.
• Ability to work with cross-disciplinary teams, document integration status and risks, explain complex technical issues, produce technical notes and test reports, and support demanding schedules.
• Must be eligible for “SECRET” security clearance under applicable national regulations and EU/ESA/NATO equivalents.

Nice to have

• Experience with O-RAN architecture and interfaces, including SMO, O1, E2, near-RT RIC, non-RT RIC, and O-RAN management or integration workflows.
• Experience with 5G-NTN or satellite communications systems, especially feeder links, gateways, payloads, or gNB integration.
• Experience with Wireshark, Keysight, Viavi, Spirent, Amarisoft, srsRAN, protocol analyzers, log-correlation platforms, or CI/CD-based test frameworks.
• Experience contributing to RFP and RFQ packages, supplier clarifications, acceptance requirements, and vendor-response evaluations.
