TL;DR
Senior MCC Engineer, IRIS2 (5G-NTN): Defining the Mission Control Centre architecture and interfaces for a 5G-NTN multi-orbit satellite system with an accent on resource orchestration, operational control, and integration across RAN, core, payload, gateways, and ground systems. Focus on translating system requirements into functional architectures, structuring MCC-SMO interfaces, and solving complex coordination, contingency management, and service continuity challenges.
Location: Betzdorf, Luxembourg, or Munich (Unterföhring), Germany. Work 60% onsite from the office; travel is required as needed for project realization.
Company
hirify.global operates satellite communications infrastructure and is a consortium partner building and operating IRIS², the European Union’s secure multi-orbit satellite communications constellation.
What you will do
Translate service, mission, operational, and system requirements into Mission Control Centre functional architecture.
Define MCC interfaces with SMO, SDN-C, GW Manager, S3C, OSS/BSS, and other ground and space segment functions.
Support MCC design teams with architecture reviews, requirement clarification, functional decomposition, operational scenarios, contingency handling, and system-level trade-offs.
Define MCC-SMO information flows for resource orchestration, RAN configuration intent, performance and availability feedback, fault coordination, and lifecycle management.
Support RFP/RFQ preparation, technical requirement baselines, vendor evaluations, compliance analysis, and trade-off studies.
Requirements
Master’s degree in engineering or science, preferably telecommunications engineering, systems engineering, space systems, or a related discipline.
10+ years of relevant industry experience in telecom, satellite communications, aerospace, defence, or complex system programmes.
Strong end-to-end knowledge of 5G-NTN architecture across RAN, Core Network, satellite payloads, gateways, inter-satellite and feeder links, orchestration, and operations.
Knowledge of 3GPP NTN, O-RAN/SMO, network management, transport routing, system engineering, interface definition, and ICD preparation.
Hands-on experience translating requirements into functional architectures, subsystem responsibilities, interface requirements, operational concepts, and verification inputs.
Experience with MCC functions including mission and service planning, resource orchestration, contingency management, service continuity, network monitoring, and cross-domain coordination.
Experience defining interfaces and ICDs for complex subsystems, including information models, operational flows, configuration and monitoring data, fault and performance information, and control responsibilities.
Experience with RFP/RFQ activities, vendor evaluation, compliance matrices, gap analysis, clarification workshops, and technical trade-offs.
Must be eligible for a “SECRET” security clearance under applicable national regulations and EU/ESA/NATO equivalents.
Nice to have
Experience with MCC, NMS/OSS, SMO, SDN controllers, gateway management, satellite control, or multi-domain orchestration systems.
Knowledge of O-RAN SMO, Non-RT RIC, O1/A1/O2 interfaces, and SMO interaction with higher-level MCC systems for NTN resource orchestration.
Experience with FCAPS, configuration management, performance and fault management, topology and resource inventory, and service assurance.
Experience with MBSE, V-model development, requirements traceability, operational scenario analysis, and architecture review boards.
Culture & Benefits
Permanent employment with collaboration across MCC, SMO/RAN, core network, satellite payload, gateway, operations, procurement, sales, and business teams.
Research and development project work involving architecture reviews, requirement clarification workshops, vendor discussions, and technical decision records.
Requires clear communication of complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and production of requirements, ICD inputs, RFP/RFQ sections, evaluation reports, and architecture notes.
Requires commitment to deadlines and willingness to meet tight development, procurement, architecture, and delivery schedules.
Hybrid arrangement with 60% onsite office work and project-related travel.
