Customs Compliance Manager (Defense)

Location: El Segundo, California, United States; other location: Los Angeles, California, United States. Onsite role.

Base salary: $130,000–$165,000 per year, excluding bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Determine and document HTS and Schedule B classifications, customs valuation, and country of origin for parts, materials, and equipment.
• Oversee customs brokers and forwarders, including powers of attorney, instructions, performance, and shipment clearance in both directions.
• Review import entries, export declarations, commercial invoices, EEI/AES filings, and supporting documents; prepare corrections and prior disclosures when needed.
• Manage customs requirements for temporary exports, demonstrations, repairs, returns, returned U.S. goods, temporary importation under bond, carnets, and foreign clearances.
• Track duty and tariff exposure, identify drawback and trade agreement opportunities, and advise Supply Chain and Logistics on sourcing, routing, Incoterms, and origin documentation.
• Maintain customs procedures and audit-ready records, conduct entry and shipment audits, respond to CBP inquiries, pursue binding rulings, and monitor regulatory and tariff developments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of customs compliance experience covering both imports and exports, preferably in aerospace, defense, manufacturing, or related technology; or a Master’s degree and at least 5 years of experience.
• Working knowledge of U.S. customs laws and the Foreign Trade Regulations, including classification, valuation, country of origin, declarations, recordkeeping, and regulatory research and interpretation.
• Hands-on HTS and Schedule B classification and customs valuation experience for manufactured goods, including repairs, returns, and no-charge shipments.
• Experience overseeing customs brokers and reviewing import entries and export declarations for accuracy.
• Familiarity with ITAR and EAR sufficient to recognize when shipments or returns involve controlled items.
• Strong judgment and the ability to work with significant autonomy and limited day-to-day oversight.

Nice to have

• U.S. Customs Broker License.
• Experience in defense, aerospace, or sensors/radar businesses shipping ITAR- and EAR-controlled hardware internationally.
• Experience with CBP inquiries, post-summary corrections, prior disclosures, or binding rulings.
• Experience with drawback, temporary importation under bond, carnets, or foreign trade zones.
• Experience with ACE and trade compliance systems such as NetSuite, SAP GTS, or Descartes.
