Counsel - Insurance, Technology, and Privacy (Hybrid)

Location: Hybrid role based in Short Hills, New Jersey, United States

Salary: USD $130,000–$168,000 per year

What you will do

• Draft, review, and negotiate technology, SaaS, cloud, software licensing, data sharing, and professional services agreements.
• Operate and improve privacy, data security, and artificial intelligence governance programs, including assessments, records, policies, and committee materials.
• Advise on privacy, cybersecurity, AI, insurance data security, breach notification, and related regulatory requirements.
• Support policy form, endorsement, manual rule, cancellation, nonrenewal, filing, complaint, and market conduct matters for insurance operations.
• Partner with information security, third-party risk management, IT, regulatory management, and business owners on vendor risks and governance conditions.
• Train business owners, manage assigned outside counsel matters, track contract issues, and escalate novel, high-risk, or strategic matters.

Requirements

• Depth in technology contracting or information compliance, including privacy, data security, or artificial intelligence governance, with working knowledge of the other areas.
• Experience operating governance or compliance programs, running assessments, applying frameworks to real use cases, documenting decisions and conditions, and working with cross-functional committees.
• Familiarity with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, state privacy and insurance data security laws, and emerging AI regulation, or the ability to develop this knowledge.
• Strong contract drafting, negotiation, written and verbal communication, judgment, organization, and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines with limited supervision and explain legal and regulatory requirements to non-lawyers.
• Proficiency with contract management and legal technology tools and demonstrated ability to earn client and colleague trust.
• Juris Doctor degree required.
• 6+ years of legal experience, including substantive technology and commercial contracting or privacy, data security, or AI governance experience.
• Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; if not admitted in New Jersey, eligibility for and commitment to obtain a New Jersey in-house counsel limited license is required.
