What you will do

  • Conduct shock-response testing of thermal protection system materials under impact, radiation, and thermal loading environments.
  • Develop test plans, pre-test models, experimental setups, hardware, fixtures, and test articles.
  • Execute tests at national and local laboratories, operate impact-test equipment, and support safe transport of instrumentation and hardware.
  • Install and calibrate optical and electrical sensors and operate data acquisition systems.
  • Process experimental data, simulate material response, assess test validity through pre- and post-test comparisons, and prepare technical reports.
  • Present results to customers, recommend future testing, and maintain laboratory equipment and procedures.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics with an emphasis in shock physics and 5–7 years of experience; or MS with 3–5 years; or PhD with 0–2 years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • Experience with measurement tools, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, microscopy, optical, structural, and thermal instrumentation.
  • Experience designing and fabricating mechanical fixtures and components, machining, hardware integration, and CAD using Creo or similar tools.
  • Scripting experience with Python and MATLAB, plus experience with data analysis.
  • Experience writing test plans and test reports and proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, process-improvement orientation, and ability to manage detailed tasks within customer-driven timelines.
  • Willingness to travel to support testing and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Practical, hands-on expertise with hardware components and system integration, including fiber optic systems and instrumentation; self-starter.

Nice to have

  • Active Top Secret clearance.
  • Experience with static, dynamic, impact, and radiation testing.
  • Experience developing material equations of state (EOS).

Culture & Benefits

  • Regular full-time employment with flexible occasional telework for candidates local to the work location.
  • Health, life, short- and long-term disability insurance, paid time off, holiday pay, and retirement and savings programs, depending on the position.
