TL;DR
Control Systems Engineer II - Applied Science (LabVIEW/Python): Developing control, automation, data acquisition, timing, and interlock systems for test and measurement of pulsed laser hardware with an accent on instrumentation integration, verification, and signal integrity. Focus on commissioning pulsed experiments, troubleshooting hardware and software on the test floor, and maintaining reliable version-controlled automation code.

Location: On-site at the headquarters in Denver, Colorado, United States. U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, refugee or asylee status is required; the role may require obtaining and maintaining a U.S. government security clearance in the future.

Salary: $106,000–$125,000 per year.

Company

Develops inertial fusion energy systems and multi-kilojoule-class pulsed lasers for clean energy and air defense applications.

What you will do

  • Develop control, automation, and data acquisition software in LabVIEW and Python for test and measurement systems.
  • Integrate instrumentation, DAQ hardware, benchtop equipment, custom electronics, and communication interfaces into test systems.
  • Configure and commission timing, trigger, and interlock hardware for pulsed experiments and verify sequencing and signal integrity.
  • Write and execute test procedures, record results, prepare verification reports, and maintain controls documentation.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues on the test floor, document root causes, and implement improvements.
  • Support test campaigns, automated regression testing, operator feedback, bug triage, and collaboration with electrical and operations teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Typically 2+ years of relevant experience in control systems, test and measurement, or automation engineering, or a Master’s degree with relevant hands-on project experience.
  • LabVIEW development, including modular, version-controlled code, and Python for test automation, instrument control, and data handling.
  • Understanding of PID control, closed-loop behavior, and state machines.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams and troubleshoot signals using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and similar instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with RS-232, TCP/IP, Ethernet-based fieldbuses, verification and validation practices, test plans, test procedures, requirements tracking, and Git.
  • Ability to work independently within defined procedures, exercise judgment on moderate-scope problems, and communicate clearly with the team.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted refugee or asylee.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance if required by future program work; clearance is not required at hire.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Experience in laser, pulsed power, accelerator, aerospace, or national laboratory test environments.
  • Exposure to Actor framework LabVIEW architectures, DAQ systems, high-speed digitizers, timing and synchronization systems, Beckhoff TwinCAT/EtherCAT, PLCs, safety-related controls, interlocks, fail-safe design, SCPI, GPIB, USB instruments, database management, test data handling, and Jira or similar sprint-based workflows.

Culture & Benefits

  • On-site engineering environment focused on fusion science, advanced hardware, manufacturing, and rapid execution.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, disability coverage, and paid parental leave.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 6% and equity eligibility.
  • Flexible paid time off, paid sick time, 13 company-paid holidays, and an annual paid company shutdown.
