Technical Lead, Data

Location: Remote from Montreal, QC or Ottawa, ON, Canada

Base salary for roles based in or eligible to work from Ontario: $145,000–$170,000 CAD annually; final compensation depends on experience, skills, and location.

What you will do

• Lead data engineers, plan capacity, manage performance, hire and onboard engineers, and grow technical ownership across the team.
• Own the architecture and health of the Data platform, including serverless services, batch and streaming pipelines, legacy pipelines, search indexes, and durable workflow orchestration.
• Drive enterprise-grade data architecture through data contracts, lineage, data quality checks, DataOps practices, and proactive monitoring.
• Formalize incident response, including on-call expectations, runbooks, severity classification, incident communication, and blameless post-incident reviews.
• Own client data onboarding and implementation, partner with Product on data capabilities, and contribute hands-on code to new systems and high-risk changes.
• Measure team outcomes, coach other teams on workflow and observability patterns, and help define safe AI usage with financial data.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 4 years focused on data engineering, data platforms, or production ETL.
• 2+ years leading engineers as a team lead or tech lead, including hiring, performance management, and developing technical leadership.
• Deep, current Node.js and TypeScript experience; Python experience is welcome alongside it.
• Deep experience designing and operating data pipelines on AWS, including serverless architectures.
• Hands-on production experience with Temporal.io or a comparable durable workflow orchestration platform such as Airflow, Dagster, or Step Functions, with the ability to ramp up on Temporal.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases and search technologies such as PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch.
• Experience building observability into data systems through structured logging, metrics, dashboards, and alerting, and using it to reduce incidents.
• Experience leading incident response and conducting post-incident reviews that produce lasting fixes.
• Evidence of building a team that delivers without depending on its lead, including delegation, ownership, and developing others.
• Experience making engineering outcomes measurable and visible to non-technical stakeholders, plus composure under pressure.

Nice to have

• Financial instrument or market data experience, including reconciliation challenges.
• Experience in a regulated industry and familiarity with data privacy obligations such as PIPEDA.
• Experience with DataOps, data contracts, data lineage, or data quality frameworks.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools or building AI tools over internal data.
• Familiarity with Datadog or similar observability platforms.
