Senior Analytics Engineer (AI/Data)

Location: Remote within the United States. Corporate roles are not hired in Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota, or Vermont. Virta is remote-first, with office hubs in Denver and San Francisco.

Salary: $161,500–$209,000, with location-based compensation determined by qualifications and experience.

What you will do

• Design reusable dbt models and BigQuery datasets representing core business concepts, including grain, keys, relationships, and historical behavior.
• Develop and maintain LookML views, Explores, measures, dashboards, documentation, and consistent shared semantics for self-service analytics.
• Deliver data rearchitecture and Looker Core migration components, reconcile results, validate dependencies, and retire legacy models and content.
• Partner with Analytics, Finance, Growth, Customer Success, and Clinical stakeholders to translate ambiguous questions and edge cases into reusable technical solutions.
• Implement tests and safeguards, investigate data discrepancies across sources, transformations, and BI outputs, and improve SQL, materializations, incremental processing, partitioning, clustering, lineage, and maintainability.
• Build governed datasets and semantic definitions for agents, AI, and ML workflows while owning delivery from technical scoping through deployment and ongoing support.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a related technical role, including shipping and supporting production data solutions.
• Advanced SQL and strong data-modeling judgment covering join cardinality, aggregation, historical state, and event sequences.
• Substantial hands-on dbt experience with modular transformations, incremental models, testing, documentation, and dependency management.
• Experience developing LookML views, Explores, dimensions, and measures, including diagnosing join behavior and maintaining consistent metric definitions.
• Experience with BigQuery or a comparable cloud data warehouse, including query optimization and tradeoffs between freshness, performance, and cost.
• Strong software engineering practices for data work, including version control, code review, automated testing, and controlled deployments; working proficiency in Python or Go for scripting, validation, and automation.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into reusable solutions, explain tradeoffs, and carry implementation through completion.
• Strong debugging skills across source systems, transformation pipelines, and BI tools, with accountability for reliability and usability.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools and validating generated SQL, code, and documentation against actual data behavior.

Nice to have

• Experience migrating analytical models or BI platforms, including reconciliation, compatibility management, and legacy decommissioning.
• Experience building semantic layers, governed natural-language analytics, or data tools for AI agents, including evaluating generated answers.
• Experience preparing reusable datasets for ML or partnering with Applied AI teams on data quality, historical consistency, and feature definitions.
• Experience with GCP, dbt Cloud, Airflow, Dagster, or automated data observability.
• Experience handling healthcare or other sensitive data, including access controls, PHI/PII, and auditability.
