Data Center Power Generation and Microgrids Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote-friendly within the United States; staff are expected to work from one of Anthropic's offices at least 25% of the time. The role requires approximately 20–35% travel for design reviews, factory witness testing, and site startup.

What you will do

• Own behind-the-meter generation architecture, including reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, fuel systems, emissions controls, redundancy, and expansion strategies.
• Design and specify battery energy storage and microgrid architectures for ride-through, step-load buffering, islanding, resynchronization, black-start, load-shedding, and generation dispatch.
• Lead utility interconnection applications, studies, agreements, ISO/RTO processes, IEEE 1547/2800 compliance, and point-of-interconnection power-quality design.
• Run or review load-flow, short-circuit, transient-stability, motor-starting, step-load, and electromagnetic-transient studies.
• Evaluate generation, BESS, and microgrid-controller vendors; define performance terms, review technical packages, and support factory, site, and integrated systems testing.
• Manage concurrent generation and microgrid scopes across multiple sites and improve design standards.

Requirements

• 10+ years of engineering experience in power generation, microgrids, battery energy storage, or utility interconnection, including substantial hands-on delivery for mission-critical, data-center, or large industrial loads.
• Hands-on experience with reciprocating engine gensets, gas turbines, or fuel cells, including sizing, paralleling, fuel systems, and emissions controls.
• Understanding of thermal generation asset classes and their response to fast load changes and stable islanded operation.
• Experience with BESS sizing, grid-forming and grid-following inverters, UL 9540, UL 9540A, and NFPA 855.
• End-to-end microgrid knowledge covering islanding, resynchronization, black-start, load-shedding, and generation dispatch.
• Fluency in IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, utility interconnection requirements, and ISO/RTO study and queue processes.
• Ability to run or critically review power-system studies using ETAP, SKM, PSS®E, PSCAD, or EasyPower.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience. PE licensure is valued but not required.
• Direct experience with generation OEMs, BESS integrators, generation-as-a-service providers, or utilities, plus clear communication with technical and non-specialist stakeholders.

Nice to have

• MW-scale BESS delivery, islanding and resynchronization controller commissioning, or an interconnection completed from application through agreement.
• HV/MV substation design, generation and interconnection protection, or renewable generation integrated with storage.
• Air-permitting and emissions-control experience, EMT modeling in PSCAD or EMTP, or experience with data-center and hyperscaler microgrids.
• Experience authoring generation or interconnection reference designs adopted across multiple sites or by external partners.
